2008 PDGA Elections: Last Call for Candidates

The May 15th deadline for submitting your candidacy for the PDGA Board of Directors or State and Provincial coordinator positions is fast approaching. Member’s who are interested in volunteering their time to serve in one of these very important elected positions, are encouraged to contact the office as soon as possible to announce your candidacy and submit a platform statement.

Once again voting will take place from June 1 to July 31, with the elected candidates assuming office as of September 1. The 2008 PDGA Election will be held on-line, with members casting their ballots at www.campus-vote.com. The first three on-line elections (2005-2007) saw record participation in terms of the % of current members voting.

During the first week of June all current members for whom the PDGA has an email address on file will receive an email from campus-vote.com with their PDGA online election instructions including their individual ballot passcode. All members whose email bounces back or who do not have an email address on file, will be mailed a postcard by campus-vote.com with their on-line ballot instructions and passcode. On or about July 10, all members with valid emails who have not yet voted will be sent a voting reminder. Those members who do not have any access to a computer or internet capability will also be able to contact the PDGA office and request a mailed paper ballot. Provided this request is received by the PDGA no later than July 10, a ballot will be mailed to the member.

Rico and Jenkins Victorious at Masters Cup

Local favorites Carrie Burlogar and Nate Doss both had the edge going into Sunday’s final round. Both players held the lead in addition to their knowledge of the scenic and sometimes evil Delaveaga. But would those advantages be sufficient for the victory?

Steve Rico came from the second card... (more)

Masters Cup Preview

The 2008 PDGA National Tour rolls into Santa Cruz this weekend for the Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup sponsored by the DGA. Over 150 players will be tested on the treacherous terrain of the Delaveaga Disc Golf course. Although a better name might be "the Good; the Bad; and the Ugly" - where a good drive or putt can catch a bad bounce and go bad in a hurry and sometimes get very ugly indeed.

With steep drop-offs, elevation changes, disc catching oak trees and a few baskets perched precariously close to OB, Delaveaga presents a challenge to the mental game as much as the physical. (more)

Schultz and Jenkins win in Bowling Green

After two rounds in the wind, driving rain, and temperatures in the low 40s, Barry Schultz saw his 5 throw lead whittled down to 1 throw after the second round over 2008 PDGA money leader Eric McCabe. After 2 holes in the 9-hole final at Lovers Lane, Schultz had gained 3 throws back on McCabe, and he gave himself some breathing room and cruised to a 4-throw victory. Schultz carded 5 birdies in the final nine holes. McCabe struggled on the first 2 holes in the finals, carding a par 3 on the first hole, and uncharacteristically 3-putting the second hole to make bogey. Otherwise, it was a solid performace by McCabe, who shot back-to-back 46s at Kereiakes and Lovers Lane on Sunday to climb within 1 throw before the finals. David Feldberg shot 46 at Kereiakes and 47 at Lovers on Sunday to nearly match McCabe's performance, and missed a 40-footer on the last hole to tie McCabe, and settled for a third place tie with road warrior Geoff Bennett from Michigan.

Val Jenkins threw an incredible 47 at Lovers Lane on Sunday, which at least temporarily gives her the second highest rated round ever by a woman at 1027. This gave her a 7-throw lead over Des Reading after round 3. But Reading came storming back in round 4 at Kereiakes... (more)

For the second day in a row, Barry Schultz carded a spectacular hole-in-one at the Memorial to grab the lead from Dave Feldberg in the Men’s Open division in the final round. Gran Canyon Petition

“Help resurrect the Gran Canyon disc golf course in Brooksville, FL.!! Anyone who ever set foot upon the Gran Canyon disc golf course in Brooksville, Florida knows just how special this track truly was.

Located just 20 minutes from The Plantation Inn in Crystal River, Florida, home of the Players Cup (A PDGA Major event) the GCDGC event was one of the highlights of the Fabulous Florida disc golf tour, setting attendance records 3 years in a row. People have traveled from as far as Russia to play the course. Even though the GCDGC was dismantled exactly one year ago after being sold, I still get the occasional call from disc golfers wanting to play the course. Here is YOUR chance to play it again (or for the first time)

Hernando County is considering the acquisition of the Gran Canyon for recreational purposes. The primary push came from mountain bikers who would like to see this property made available as much as we would. Please follow the link below to sign the petition to insure that, in the event of their successful bid to acquire the property, disc golfers will have a voice in the development of the recreational facility. Let’s keep the dream alive!!

Anyone interested in the purchase of the GC property ($1.5M) for the purposes of disc golf should contact Gregg Hosfeld directly at 407-701-9058. Gregg has been assured by the current owner that the course has been relatively undisturbed.

King is Queen Again

Elaine King: US Women's Champ

Mixed emotions of joy and sadness fell on the 60 women who competed in this year's United States Women's Disc Golf Championships in Peoria, Illinois. The last few days in September have been deemed "the women's weekend of disc golf," as this PDGA Major event has taken place for the past six years. Mom and Old Man Wallis have fearlessly forged forward with help from the Peoria Frisbee Club in making this a truly unique event and this year was no different.

Perfect Play, Positive Personal Life: Climo's Formula for Fifth USDGC Title
By Dr. John G. Duesler, Jr.

While the rest of the disc golf community searched desperately to describe the performance of Ken Climo this week at the United States Disc Golf Championship, the now five-time winner used just one word: "flawless."

After his first round, Climo put together an incredible run of 53 straight bogey-free holes to essentially turn this year's USDGC into a contest for second place. With the inevitability of adding a fifth Championship ring to his collection, the only question on the 72nd hole was whether Climo would break the Winthrop Gold course record that he had just set the previous day. And though his second throw found the yellow string on the 560 feet South Carolina hole forcing him to settle for back-to-back course record 56's, it did not diminish Climo's dominating performance during the last three rounds.
